Ben Barnes thaws Russian co-stars

Ben Barnes found a crate of vodka, cigarettes and a Russian phrasebook came in handy when filming his latest flick Bigga Than Ben.

The cast of the film, which is subtitled The Russians' Guide To Ripping Off London, were primarily from Russia and Romania, so Ben came across a bit of a language barrier.

Talking about getting to know his Russian co-star Andrei Chadov - quite a notable actor in his home country - Ben said: "At the beginning it was me sitting in the corner watching him sitting in the corner quietly.

"We slept on mattresses in a flat in north London together with a case of vodka and cigarettes and Susie [the director] literally said 'don't come in looking pretty in the morning' and so we didn't. (*неприлично ржет* чую, кто-то сейчас полезет в Ворд...)

"I also bought a phonetic Russian phrasebook to be able to communicate at all because it was very difficult for the first week or two."

But Ben said the British sense of humour rubbed off on Andrei in the end.

"He has a very serious face, but when he breaks into a smile he can't help himself and that was very rewarding," he said.

"I remember Andrei saying 'everyone's always smiling' but after a couple of weeks he did have a smile on his face so it must have rubbed off."

Bigga Than Ben is out on Friday, October 10.
